License renewal

Colorado real estate license renewal and CE

Renewals are handled by the Colorado Division of Real Estate and the Real Estate Commission. Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Renewal cycle

A first Colorado broker license expires at midnight on December 31 of the year it was issued, with no CE due in that first period. After that, licenses run on a 3-year cycle.

Continuing education

  • 24 hours of CE each 3-year cycle for active brokers.
  • 12 of the 24 hours are three different versions of the 4-hour Annual Commission Update course. Active brokers take the update course each year and pass its exam. The other 12 hours are electives.
  • Keep proof of completion for at least 4 years.

Late or expired

  • A missed annual update course cannot be made up. Alternatives: the 24-hour Broker Reactivation Course (once every other cycle), the state portion of the broker exam, or 48 hours of Colorado Contracts and Regulations plus 24 hours of Real Estate Closings.
  • An expired license can be reinstated for up to 3 years after expiration; it comes back inactive, and you file a separate application to activate it. After 3 years you reapply.
  • If a license has been inactive more than 3 years, you need the state exam portion or the 72 hours of contracts and closings courses before going active.
