License renewal

Minnesota real estate license renewal and CE

Renewals are handled by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Renewal cycle

Minnesota licenses renew for 24-month periods, and your broker renews the license for each eligible salesperson. You cannot do business after June 30 of the renewal year until the renewal is approved. The salesperson renewal fee is $40 plus the surcharge and fund fee.

Continuing education

  • 30 hours of approved CE in each 24-month period, with at least 15 of them in the first 12 months.
  • Each period must include at least 1 hour on agency representation and disclosure and 1 hour on fair housing (commercial-only licensees who file a verification are exempt from these two).
  • Courses in motivation, salesmanship, psychology or time management do not count.

First renewal

  • An initial license expires in the year that gives it a term of at least 12 and no more than 24 months, and the 30-hour CE rule applies to the initial period too.

Late or expired

  • Your broker must renew you if you finished all renewal requirements, including CE, before June 15 of the renewal year. If you have not received the renewal by July 1, you are unlicensed until it is issued.
  • If you go 2 years without renewing, you must take the exam again.
