License renewal
Ohio real estate license renewal and CE
Renewals are handled by the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing and the Ohio Real Estate Commission. Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Renewal cycle
Ohio licensees file a notice of renewal every year by the deadline the Commission sets by rule. The first license year ends on your first birthday after the license is issued, and the division emails the renewal notice two months before the deadline.
Continuing education
- 30 hours of CE, as prescribed by the Commission, on or before your birthday 3 years after initial licensure, and every 3 years after that.
- Licensees 70 or older complete 9 hours instead, covering Ohio real estate law, recent state and federal laws, civil rights law and the canons of ethics. Inactive licensees 70 or older are exempt.
- Brokers and management-level licensees add a 3-hour course on the duties of a principal broker.
Late or expired
- If CE is not done on time, the license is suspended automatically.
- If you do not file the renewal by the deadline, the license is suspended. You can reactivate within 12 months by paying the renewal fee plus a 50% penalty; after that it is revoked automatically.
