License renewal

Texas real estate license renewal and CE

Renewals are handled by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Renewal cycle

Texas sales agent licenses renew every 2 years. TREC sends a renewal notice about 90 days before expiration, and you renew in the REALM Portal by the expiration date.

Continuing education

  • 18 hours of approved CE each renewal: 8 hours of TREC Legal Update I and II, 3 hours of contract-related coursework and 7 hours of electives.
  • If your broker made you a supervisor, the 6-hour Broker Responsibility course is part of your 18 hours.
  • Finish CE at least 10 days before expiration so it has time to post.

First renewal

  • First renewal: Sales Agent Apprentice Education (SAE) instead of regular CE. That is the 30-hour Real Estate Brokerage course, two more 30-hour qualifying courses and 8 hours of TREC Legal Update I and II. SAE hours cannot be deferred: if they are not done, the license expires.

Late or expired

  • If you renew active without finishing CE, you pay a $200 CE deferral fee and get 60 more days to finish.
  • You can renew up to 6 months after expiration (late renewal is on inactive status and CE cannot be deferred). From 6 months to 2 years, you apply for reinstatement. After 2 years, you reapply and pass the exam again.
  • You can renew inactive without CE, but you cannot do brokerage work while inactive.
