License renewal
Virginia real estate license renewal and CE
Renewals are handled by the Virginia Real Estate Board, part of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Renewal cycle
Virginia licenses expire 2 years from the last day of the month they were issued. The Board mails a renewal notice, but not getting it does not excuse a late renewal.
Continuing education
- Active salespersons: 16 hours of CE each license term. 11 hours are required topics: 2 fair housing, 3 ethics and standards of conduct, 2 agency, 2 contracts and 2 legal updates and emerging trends. The other 5 are electives from the Board list.
- Brokers: 24 hours, including 8 hours of supervision and brokerage management.
First renewal
- First renewal for salespersons: the 30-hour post-license curriculum replaces regular CE, whether the license is active or inactive.
Late or expired
- If renewal is not complete within 30 days after expiration, you pay the reinstatement fee. A license can be reinstated for up to one year after expiration; after that it cannot be reinstated.
- Inactive licensees do not need CE to renew, but must meet the education rules to activate.
