License renewal

Maine real estate license renewal and CE

Renewals are handled by the Maine Real Estate Commission (Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation). Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Renewal cycle

The Maine sales agent license lasts 2 years and cannot be renewed. Sales agents who want to keep practicing move up to associate broker: 2 years of active practice as a sales agent plus the 60-hour Associate Broker Course with a final grade of at least 75%. Broker and associate broker licenses then renew every 2 years for $100.

Continuing education

  • Associate brokers and brokers need 21 hours of Commission-approved CE per renewal, including the current core course. Certificates are not sent at renewal, but the Commission runs random monthly audits.
  • Renew online or on paper up to 60 days before expiration. Reminders are emailed at least 30 days before.
  • Going active after inactive status takes 21, 28 or 36 CE hours depending on whether you were inactive up to 2, 4 or 6 years. After 6 or more years, pass the Maine Law exam and reapply.

Late or expired

  • A broker or associate broker license can be renewed up to 90 days after expiration with a $50 late fee; no business may be conducted until renewed. After 90 days, pass the Maine Law exam (75%) and submit a new application. Expired sales agent licenses cannot be reinstated this way.
