How to get a Maine real estate license

Maine licenses real estate professionals through the Maine Real Estate Commission (Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Meet the basics

Be at least 18 when you apply and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Pass the Sales Agent course

Complete the Sales Agent course with a final grade of at least 75%.

  3. Pass the exam within 1 year

Pass the Pearson VUE sales agent exam with at least 75% within 1 year of passing the course.

  4. Affiliate and apply within 1 year

Apply within 1 year of passing the exam. Fees are $100 for the license plus $21 for the criminal records check. You can only work for a licensed real estate agency, under its designated broker.

Keeping your license

  • Associate brokers and brokers need 21 hours of Commission-approved CE per renewal, including the current core course. Certificates are not sent at renewal, but the Commission runs random monthly audits.
  • Renew online or on paper up to 60 days before expiration. Reminders are emailed at least 30 days before.
  • Going active after inactive status takes 21, 28 or 36 CE hours depending on whether you were inactive up to 2, 4 or 6 years. After 6 or more years, pass the Maine Law exam and reapply.

Questions

Do I need a website on day one?

No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
