License renewal
Maryland real estate license renewal and CE
Renewals are handled by the Maryland Real Estate Commission (MREC). Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Renewal cycle
Maryland licenses expire on a staggered basis and renew for 2-year terms. The Commission sends the renewal notice at least 60 days before expiration, to your broker's principal office.
Continuing education
- 15 clock hours of CE per term, finished at least 30 days before you submit the renewal.
- For most renewals (residential): Legal and Legislative Update 3, Fair Housing 2, Ethics 3, Principles of Brokerage Relationships and Disclosure 3 and 4 hours of electives. Commercial-only licensees take ADA in place of Fair Housing.
- The Maryland ethics, legislative and brokerage relationships courses cannot be substituted. Out-of-state hours may count only toward electives.
First renewal
- Salespersons first licensed on or after October 1, 2023 take a set 15 hours at first renewal: Contracts 3, Brokerage Relationships and Disclosure 3, Principles of Real Estate Practice 3, Property Management and Landlord and Tenant Laws 3, Professionalism 1.5 and Real Estate Financing 1.5.
Late or expired
- Missing the 30-day CE deadline brings a reinstatement fee set by the Commission.
- An expired license can be reinstated within 3 years after it expires, with CE for the time unlicensed and a reinstatement fee.
- To stay inactive you must still complete CE and renew.
