License renewal

New Jersey real estate license renewal and CE

Renewals are handled by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission (Department of Banking and Insurance). Summary checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Renewal cycle

New Jersey licenses run on a 2-year term. The current term is July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027, so renewals are due by June 30, 2027.

Continuing education

  • 12 CE credit hours per term. At least 6 must be core topics, including 2 hours of ethics, 1 hour of Fair Housing and the NJ Law Against Discrimination, and 1 hour of agency. The other 6 can be core or elective.
  • Finish all 12 hours by the CE deadline of April 30, 2027, or pay a mandatory $200 late CE processing fee.
  • Completing a broker prelicensure course counts as CE for the term in which you finish it.

First renewal

  • Salespersons first licensed in the second year of a term (on or after July 1, 2026 for this term) do not need CE to renew at the end of that term. Those licensed in the first year do.

Late or expired

  • A license not renewed by June 30 of the term's last year expires.
  • You can reinstate within the following 2-year term (a license that expired in 2025 has until June 30, 2027), after completing the CE for the term you missed.
