How to get a New Jersey real estate license

New Jersey licenses real estate professionals through the New Jersey Real Estate Commission (Department of Banking and Insurance). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Meet the basics

You must be 18 or older and have a high school education or equivalency. The commission must be satisfied as to your honesty and character, and a criminal record can lead to denial.

  2. Take the 75-hour prelicensure course

Complete a 75-hour prelicensure course at a school licensed by the commission.

  3. Pass the license exam

After the course, pass the New Jersey salesperson license exam.

  4. Apply through a sponsoring broker

After the course and the exam, you apply for the license through the New Jersey broker who will sponsor you. New Jersey has no reciprocity with other states.

Keeping your license

  • 12 CE credit hours per term. At least 6 must be core topics, including 2 hours of ethics, 1 hour of Fair Housing and the NJ Law Against Discrimination, and 1 hour of agency. The other 6 can be core or elective.
  • Finish all 12 hours by the CE deadline of April 30, 2027, or pay a mandatory $200 late CE processing fee.
  • Completing a broker prelicensure course counts as CE for the term in which you finish it.

Questions

Do I need a website on day one?

No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
