How to get a South Dakota real estate license
South Dakota licenses real estate professionals through the South Dakota Real Estate Commission (Department of Labor and Regulation). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Step by step
Meet the basics
The entry-level license is broker associate. You must be at least 18 and a U.S. citizen or South Dakota resident. The Commission may deny a license for reasons such as a felony conviction or unpaid judgments.
Complete the 116-hour course
Take an approved 116-hour prelicensing course. You must apply within 2 years of finishing it.
Pass the PSI exam
Register with PSI ($105 by credit card) and pass the South Dakota and national parts with 75%. Exams are given by computer in Madison, Rapid City and Sioux Falls.
Apply within 60 days
File your license application within 60 days of the notice that you passed, or you forfeit the score.
Keeping your license
- At least 24 hours during the preceding two license years to renew active, with at least 12 in Required subject areas.
- Inactive renewals ($125) need no CE and no proof of E&O.
Questions
Do I need a website on day one?
No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
