License guide
How to get an Idaho real estate license
Idaho licenses real estate professionals through the Idaho Real Estate Commission (Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Step by step
Meet the basics
Be 18 or older and show proof of high school graduation or its equivalent. Certain recent disciplinary actions and convictions are disqualifying, with an exemption review possible after 5 years.
Complete 90 hours
Take Salesperson Prelicense Module 1 (45 hours) and Module 2 (45 hours) within 3 years before you apply. Courses can be live, remote via Zoom or self-paced online; you must attend 100% and pass each final with 70% or higher.
Pass the exam
Pass the national and Idaho state portions within 12 months before your license application. The nonrefundable exam fee cannot exceed $150 by law.
Get fingerprinted and apply
Be fingerprinted for a national criminal history check, sign the irrevocable consent to service and apply to the Commission.
Keeping your license
- To renew active: 2 different Idaho Commission core courses you have not taken before, plus 12 elective hours.
- Extra hours do not carry over, and you cannot get credit twice for the same core course or for the same course within a license period.
- Renewing inactive needs no education then, but all required education must be done before the license is activated.
Questions
Do I need a website on day one?
No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
