How to get an Arizona real estate license

Arizona licenses real estate salespersons through the Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against ADRE and the Arizona statutes in October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Meet the basics

You must be at least 18 and show proof of authorized legal presence in the United States.

  2. Take the 90-hour pre-licensing course

Complete the 90-hour salesperson course at an ADRE-certified school and pass the proctored course exam in person. The certificate must be less than 10 years old when you apply.

  3. Pass both state exams

Take the salesperson exams with Pearson, the ADRE testing vendor: one General and one State-Specific. Apply within one year of passing.

  4. Take the 6-hour contract writing course

Complete the 6-hour Contract Writing course within 2 years before you apply.

  5. Get a fingerprint clearance card and apply

Get a fingerprint clearance card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, then submit the salesperson application, the disciplinary action disclosure form, both exam score reports and your course certificates. First-time applicants may qualify for a fee waiver.

Keeping your license

  • 24 hours of ADRE-approved continuing education each 2-year license period for salespersons. Hours count by category, and renewal is blocked until every required category is complete.
  • Since January 1, 2025, renewal hours include 1 hour each of Firewise, Deed Fraud and Arizona Water.
  • Submit each course certificate through the Licensee Login. ADRE does not receive completions from the school.

Questions

I am licensed in another state. What do I need?

If you hold at least an equivalent license in another state, Arizona law exempts you from the national portion of the exam, but you must pass the Arizona-specific exam.

Can I take the 90-hour course online?

Yes, as live classroom or distance learning through an ADRE-certified school, but the proctored course exam is taken in person.

Do I need a website on day one?

No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
