License guide
How to get a Louisiana real estate license
Louisiana licenses real estate professionals through the Louisiana Real Estate Commission (LREC). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Step by step
Complete 90 hours of pre-licensing education
The 90 hours cover real estate principles and practices, the Louisiana Real Estate License Law, Commission rules, the law of agency and civil law on real estate. Take them at an LREC state-certified school (online is allowed through an approved internet-based school), and pass each course's final exam to get the certificate.
College or out-of-state credit
College courses and courses from other jurisdictions can earn partial credit if the LREC approves them before you apply. The 30-hour Louisiana law, rules, agency and civil law portion cannot be substituted.
Get licensed and finish post-license education
Within 180 days of your initial license date, complete the 45-hour post-license education at an LREC-approved school, including an exam on course content. If you go inactive within 180 days, you finish it before returning to active.
Keeping your license
- 12 hours of approved CE on or before December 31 each year, including the LREC mandatory course topic for that year.
- For 2026 the mandatory course is Transparency, Technology, and Trust for salespersons and brokers, with a commercial alternate. Brokers and associate brokers also take the Broker Mandatory course.
- Missing the December 31 deadline is a violation and can bring a fine citation.
Questions
Do I need a website on day one?
No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
