License guide
How to get a Kansas real estate license
Kansas licenses real estate professionals through the Kansas Real Estate Commission (KREC). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Step by step
Meet the basics
Be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or equivalent before you start the pre-license requirements. You must affiliate with a Kansas-licensed broker; an original license cannot be issued as inactive.
Apply for pre-licensure
Answer the eligibility questions and pay the $85 fingerprint and application processing fee. You get a PL number that schools and exams use to track your progress. You can get fingerprinted while you study.
Take 60 hours and both exams
Complete the 30-hour Principles of Real Estate and the 30-hour Kansas Practice Course. Exam authorization comes after Principles; pass both the national and state salesperson exams.
Apply for the license
When prompted by email, apply online with your supervising broker's company details, disclose any arrests or charges, and pay the $125 license fee. Staff process complete applications in 7 to 10 business days.
Keeping your license
- 12 hours to renew active, including at least 3 hours in the approved Kansas Required Core course.
- Only one 3-hour appraisal-type course counts per renewal period. CE done on the same day as your renewal applies to that cycle only.
Questions
Do I need a website on day one?
No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
