How to get a Hawaii real estate license

Hawaii licenses real estate professionals through the Hawaii Real Estate Commission (Professional and Vocational Licensing Division, DCCA). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Meet the basics

By the exam date, be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent and be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or authorized to work in the U.S. You also need a reputation for competency, honesty and fair dealing. Hawaii does not reciprocate with other states.

  2. Complete the 60-hour course

Complete a 60-hour Hawaii salesperson prelicensing course at a registered prelicense school. The school completion certificate is valid for 2 years.

  3. Pass the exam

Register directly with the testing agency and pass the Hawaii salesperson exam. You get a score report with instructions to apply.

  4. Apply within 2 years

Submit a complete application within 2 years of passing. To be licensed on active status you must be associated with an active Hawaii brokerage firm or sole proprietor.

Keeping your license

  • 20 hours of approved CE each biennium (January 1 of odd years to December 31 of even years) to renew on active status: the 6-hour Commission core course and 14 elective hours.

Questions

Do I need a website on day one?

No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
