How to get a Michigan real estate license

Michigan licenses real estate professionals through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Meet the basics

You must be at least 18 and meet the good moral character standard. Non-Michigan residents also file a Consent to Service of Process form.

  2. Take 40 hours of prelicensure education

Complete 40 hours of approved prelicensure courses, including at least 4 hours on civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing. The certificate is valid for 36 months.

  3. Apply in MiPLUS

Apply online at michigan.gov/miplus. The new application fee is $88, which includes the 3-year license. You then get an email with your Exam Candidate ID. Applications are valid for one year.

  4. Pass the PSI exam

PSI runs the salesperson exam. A passing result is valid for one year and posts to your application.

  5. Add your employing broker

A licensed individual broker or broker company must sponsor you. In MiPLUS, enter your broker's 10-digit license number; the license is issued once the broker approves.

Keeping your license

  • At least 18 hours of CE in each 3-year cycle.
  • Every year of the cycle: at least 2 hours on real estate laws, rules and court cases, and at least 1 hour on fair housing compliance. The rest can be done any time before renewal.
  • LARA does not track your hours. Keep proof for at least 4 years after you certify.

Questions

Do I need a website on day one?

No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
