How to get an Alabama real estate license
Alabama licenses real estate professionals through the Alabama Real Estate Commission. Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Step by step
Take the 60-hour prelicense course
Complete the 60-clock-hour salesperson prelicense course within 1 year of its start date, or you lose the credit and start over. You can earn no more than 8 hours of credit per day.
Get your temporary license
Once you qualify, the Commission issues a temporary salesperson license. It can be active for the first 6 months, then stays valid only as inactive for another 6 months.
Finish the 30-hour post license course
You need the temporary license number to start the 30-hour post license course. To stay active, finish it and get your original (permanent) license within the first 6 months.
Apply for the original license
Send the original salesperson application, fee and post license completion so the Commission receives them within 1 year (by the last day of the month 1 year after the first of the month following issuance). Otherwise the temporary license lapses.
Keeping your license
- 15 clock hours per license period: 3 hours in the Commission-approved Risk Management course and 12 hours in other Commission-approved courses.
- Associate and qualifying brokers take 3 Risk Management, 3 in the Broker course and 9 other approved hours.
- Motivational, personal development, sales meeting and in-house training courses do not count.
Questions
Do I need a website on day one?
No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
