License guide
How to get a Montana real estate license
Montana licenses real estate professionals through the Montana Board of Realty Regulation (Department of Labor and Industry). Here is the path in plain steps, checked against the official sources in October 2026.
Step by step
Meet the basics
Be at least 18 and have credit for 2 years of full curriculum study at an accredited high school, or the equivalent.
Complete 70 hours
Finish 70 hours of approved pre-licensing education within the past 24 months.
Pass the exam
Pass the Montana Real Estate Salesperson Examination (state and national portions) through Pearson VUE within the past 12 months.
Join a broker and apply
Be employed by or under contract with a broker who holds a supervising broker endorsement, show professional liability and errors and omissions insurance and pay the $80 application fee. Applying online is recommended.
Keeping your license
- At least 12 hours of continuing real estate education every licensing year (November 1 through October 31) for active licensees.
- All ARELLO courses are approved for Montana CE credit.
Questions
Do I need a website on day one?
No, but a simple page with your photo, brokerage and contact info helps clients find you. Property Landing Pages has a free plan with one listing page and an agent site.
